 My Counseling Approach

As a counselor, my focus and view are holistic in nature. I seek to work collaboratively as we gain insight into the various and complex facets that may have become stumbling blocks in your path and are thwarting you from living optimally. My counseling services are based upon a highly relational, client-centered approach. This is the foundation that guides my counseling style in which I use interventions from attachment theory and a neurobiological framework, polyvagal theory, trauma informed care, choice theory, and an understanding how you create meaning and purpose.

I tailor and implement a combination of play and expressive arts interventions for children ages 3-10, and use an integrative approach for teens and adults to include narrative therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), strength-based, and cognitive-behavioral (CBT) approaches. I am currently in training for certification in Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) and TraumaPlay.

The relationship that we develop with each other is the most important factor in determining the success of our progress together, which includes building trust, safety, empathy, respect, and genuineness. By assessing clients' current life situations holistically, I acknowledge the interconnectedness of various life factors and recognize the importance of considering multiple influences in the therapeutic process. I will do a thorough intake to include gathering information about your early childhood attachments, any prior trauma history, family relationships, friendships, intimate relationships, spirituality, career, education, leisure activities, physical health, and living environment. This holistic view allows us to explore the interplay among these areas, recognizing that they collectively shape an individual's experiences and overall mental health.

About Me

My professional journey has been diverse, encompassing both military service and a broad range of roles across various sectors. During my four years of active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard, my contributions included working as a law enforcement officer, search and rescue responder, emergency dispatch operator, and later as an executive assistant. Following my military service, my career path has spanned over 25 years working in real estate and healthcare. I have served in roles as a mobile crisis counselor, providing mental health evaluations for a county jail, served as a rural clinic counselor, laboratory sales director for cardiovascular and diabetes prevention, and a nutritional, lifestyle, and fitness coach and trainer. I have also been involved in facilitating mental health groups in psychiatric units, working in rehabilitation with patients with traumatic brain injuries, and counseling in juvenile detention centers.

I have formal training in individual and group counseling from Liberty University where I earned my Masters of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I am currently a licensed clinical professional counselor candidate (PCLC) and am under supervision by Mark Knox, LMFT. I am also a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. I also enjoy working with couples as a certified Symbis assessment facilitator, counseling pre-marital and married couples.

As a military veteran, I am honored to continue working with and serving military members and their families and further developing my training in trauma interventions unique to military experience and demands. I have been traveling to Montana for vacation for over 20 years and finally made it home several years ago. I am originally from Utah, but have lived all over the country from one coast to another. On my down time, I can be found in various fitness endeavors, enjoying nature, laughing with family and friends, traveling, playing guitar, or enjoying reading a book by a fire.

Kristi sees clients in Bozeman, Livingston, and via tele-health.
